Theory Lesson 16
PAYMENTS / 5 MIN

Solvent is not the same as ready

Available funds have a location, a currency and a deadline.

01

The timing problem

A business can expect enough incoming value overall and still lack funds where a payment is due now. Liquidity concerns the ability to meet obligations when needed. Profitability, total asset value and immediately usable cash answer different questions and should not share one dashboard label.

02

Locate usable funds

Map balances by currency, institution, availability and relevant settlement window. Expected receipts are not necessarily usable receipts. The same total can support very different payout capacity when some money is restricted, still in transit or unavailable through the required route at the needed time.

03

A payout morning

A fictional platform owes €80,000 at noon and has €60,000 available in the payout account. Another €40,000 is expected later that afternoon. The day may balance overall, but the noon gap is €20,000 unless another eligible source can fund the obligation in time.

04

Prepare before the gap

Forecast normal and stressed payment timing, specify escalation ownership and monitor actual arrivals against assumptions. Test how delayed receipts, unavailable routes and concentrated payout demand affect the plan. This operational exercise does not establish any institution’s regulatory liquidity requirements or replace its treasury and compliance judgement.

Check your understanding

€80,000 is due at noon; €60,000 is available then. What is the immediate gap?
