The message travels. The money does not.

The checkout submits an authorisation request. Payment infrastructure routes it to the issuer. This path is conceptual: several roles may be combined in one provider.

Customer → merchant → payment provider → network → issuer

01

A message is not money

In a typical online card flow, the merchant sends a payment request through its payment provider. Processing connections carry it through the card network to the issuer. Authentication, such as a 3-D Secure challenge, may also be part of the flow; it is separate from the authorisation decision.

02

Authorisation: can this proceed?

The issuer typically returns an approval or decline. An approval can reserve available funds or credit. It does not mean the merchant has received a payout. The response travels back so the checkout can report an outcome.

03

Capture, clearing and settlement

Capture submits the authorised amount for completion. Clearing exchanges financial transaction details; settlement discharges obligations between participating institutions. Providers may combine steps in their interface. The merchant’s payout is a further operational event, affected by its provider’s schedule and balance.

04

Read the state, not just the screen

A checkout timeout is not a reliable final payment outcome. Reconcile the provider’s recorded state before retrying. This lesson shows a simplified two-stage card flow; single-message flows, exceptions and schedules vary. Use the interactive route above to separate messages from financial movement.
