BANKING / 5 MIN

Permission with a perimeter

Understand recurring payments through limits, purpose and customer control.

01

A continuing arrangement

Recurring payment products avoid asking the customer to start from zero every time, but they still need a defined permission model. In variable recurring payments, the arrangement can include limits within which payment initiation is permitted. The precise service and supported use case matter when describing the capability.

02

Describe the perimeter

A useful customer explanation covers who can initiate, the relevant accounts, the permitted purpose and the applicable limits. “Connect your bank” is not enough. Product teams should be able to explain what happens when a proposed payment falls outside the agreed arrangement before launching the feature.

03

A controlled example

Consider a fictional arrangement permitting transfers up to €50 each and €200 in a month. After €180 has been used, a proposed €40 transfer would exceed the monthly perimeter even though it is below the individual limit. Both dimensions need to be considered together.

04

Keep control accessible

Customers need a clear way to understand and manage the ongoing arrangement through the supported service. Keep payment execution records linked to the permission in force at that moment. Do not confuse permission to initiate with a guarantee that every attempted payment will have sufficient funds or succeed.

Check your understanding

The monthly limit is €200, used amount €180 and next request €40. What is true?
